Is Botox and botulinum toxin the same?

Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The same toxin causes a potentially fatal form of food poisoning called botulism. Doctors use it in small doses to treat health problems, including temporarily smoothing facial wrinkles and improving appearance.

Botox (botulinum toxin) Botox® injections improve appearance by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles. These injections also treat medical conditions such as migraines, hyperhidrosis, an overactive bladder, and eye problems. To maintain results, treatment must be repeated every three to six months.

What are the benefits of botulinum toxin in the lower face?

Relaxation of the depressed muscles of the lower face with botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) can produce a stretching effect and dramatically improve jaw contour and facial expression at rest.

What is botulinum toxin used for?

Botulinum toxin may be used:

  • Smooth crow's feet, forehead hair, brow bones, lip lines and bunny lines
  • Lower the neckband
  • Improve the appearance of dimples on the skin of the chin.
  • Lift the corners of the mouth
  • Soften a square jaw
  • Correct a gummy smile

It is the most toxic biological substance known. Very small amounts of botulinum toxin can cause botulism, a descending paralysis with prominent bulbar symptoms and often affects the autonomic nervous system. Botulism can occur in two ways. It can result from infection with bacterial spores that produce and release toxins into the body, as in enteric infectious botulism, and wound botulism when bacteria grow in the intestines and infect wounds. Alternatively, botulism occurs after ingestion of the toxin (foodborne botulism).
